Delhi Crime Season 2 Review

In Indian cinema and television, police-driven storylines have often included male characters. Female characters were relatively minimal. Even with that size, there are very few iconic characters that are remembered by the audience.

One of the most popular characters who caught the eye in the cinema is Shivani Shivaji Roy who we meet in the movie Mardaani. Apart from this, Meera Deshmukh in Drishyam can also be nominated. But DCP Varthika Chatur, whom we meet in the Delhi Crime web series, brings a powerful identity to the female police role.

It is not only the nature of the character that affects it. The excellent performance of Shefali Shah, who plays the role, is also a major factor. The reason for the first season of this was the Nirbhaya gang rape which shocked the whole world including India. In that real incident, a 22-year-old woman named Jyoti Singh was seriously gang-raped by six men. This serious crime has sparked a heated debate about the safety of women in India as a country. The speech became a topic of discussion around the world. Another issue presented in that topic was how the Indian Police basically implemented this.

The police are the main place to ensure the safety of the common people. Delhi Crimes shows the public criticism of the way they initially responded to this and the way they later resolved the incident. Delhi Crimes very successfully presented the fact that they are human beings even though they wear uniforms. Accordingly, this is the story of their lives that flow forward with the crimes taking place in Delhi.

A major reason why Delhi Crime is so successful is the identities created in the script for the main, supporting, and even minor characters. The way the character of Varthika Chaturvedi, the main character, is built is a prime example of that. Varthika is engaged in a profession where she has to compete for side by side with men and in a position where women are relatively few. Varthika does not let her femininity hinder her career at all. She has the strength to fight with a person of any level. That’s because she is a tough/no-nonsense kind of intelligent police commissioner. At the same time, she is a mother and a wife.

Varthika’s character brings great relatability if not closeness to any professional woman. That closeness has been successfully highlighted not only in the character of Varthika, but also in the characters of Neeti and Bupendra. That’s why we feel the humanity of these people in uniform. Both the seasons of Delhi Crime were based on crimes that leave a strong shock in the viewer.

The true reality and brutality of those events are not sugarcoated in any way. Especially in the first season, it showed how the rapists involved in the crime presented their revelations without any hesitation. It was presented to be very similar to the actual event here. It was handled in such a way as to generate intense anger and hatred towards them, especially in the viewer. At the same time, the curiosity required by the story was very well managed.

Shefali Shah, who plays Varthika Chaturvedi, has given one of the best performances of her acting career through this role. She has done a great job, especially with the tough/no-nonsense nature of that character as well as the sensitive aspect. At the same time, Rasika Dugal and Rajesh Tailang can also witness powerful performances. Another memorable performance here is Tillotama Shome, who we meet in season 2. It’s a different kind of performance that we haven’t seen from Shome.

Especially one scene between her and Shefali Shah is enough to understand her acting range. Although Delhi Crime Season 2 was a bit of a downer when compared to the first part, it once again did a good job with the genre and theme of the series.

Delhi Crimes is a must-watch series among Indian web dramas.
