Exit Bag can be called another excellent creation of the team including Joe Dissanayake who brought us the short film Moment. In the movie Moment, we were presented with a complex human statement related to love.
Its content and tone are extremely painful. Exit Bag is a harsh reality that emerges in the same theme. In the face of the painful profile presented to us through Moment, it is difficult to categorize it as standard or non-standard. But Exit Bag shows a closeness with the term ‘unstandard’. The term “unrequited love” is a topic that we have often heard about in Sri Lanka in the past few days.
I also watched with an understanding of how it was interpreted in different ways. Generally speaking, many people call love outside of marriage or a romantic relationship illegal. Outside love within marriage is more complex than outside love within a romantic relationship. Here, rather than whether it is right or wrong to leave a relationship, there should be an understanding of the fact that people do it for various reasons.
If we consider the common things that happen like this: Not getting the love and attention that one expects from one’s spouse when they start living under the same roof, the idea that ideas do not match, lack of understanding, one’s going to control the other unnecessarily and that relationship. Matters such as the lack of sexual satisfaction that he expected can be more or less affected. As a person living in a country outside Sri Lanka that has embraced the western culture, these dual social environments can respond to him in two ways.
In the society I live in today, many people are tempted to respond with patience regarding this. Only a few go as far as punishing each other either violently or for psychological satisfaction. It happens like this because there is no ideology among men and women in this kind of society that highlights the rights of the other like ‘You are now mine.
Therefore, it is easy for them to exit in such a situation. Exit Bag does not depict a couple living in the society I mentioned above. They very much represent a society that emphasizes rights over the other, ‘You are mine now, which is common in Asian societies. The woman we see in this film is involved in an affair outside her marriage. Her husband chooses not to separate from his wife and punish her physically and mentally. He enjoys physically and mentally abusing his wife. It is truly inhumane.
But it is a dangerous reality of the abnormal that we sometimes feel like a fantasy. The designers have managed to show this as a matter that can go as far as a dangerous reality. At the same time, it was shown to us that exiting such a place is an extremely difficult task in this 16-minute period. The performances here were also seen at a very high level.
Samanali Fonseka and Randika Gunathilaka gave an excellent performance second to each other. At the same time, the background music as well as the camera work made a strong contribution to showing the elements that highlight the theme of the story.
