Husband drugs, rapes, and exploits wife with 72 men for nearly a decade

Dominique Pelicot, 71, is accused of drugging his wife, Gisele, and inviting dozens of men to rape her while she was unconscious. The assaults allegedly occurred between 2011 and 2020, with 92 rapes committed by 72 men.

Pelicot is facing trial alongside 51 men, including a journalist, forklift driver, and firefighter. Some men participated once, while others returned repeatedly. They argue they were unaware of Gisele’s drugged state, but Pelicot claims they all knew.

Gisele, now 72, is confronting the horror of reliving the assaults in court. She described feeling betrayed and disgusted by her husband’s actions.

The abuse began in Paris and continued when they moved to Mazan, a village in southern France. Pelicot filmed the assaults and even encouraged other men with degrading language.

Gisele had started to suspect something was wrong due to frequent unexplained tiredness before the investigation. It wasn’t until Pelicot was caught for upskirting women that the crimes were uncovered.

Police discovered hundreds of videos and photos of Gisele being assaulted while unconscious. Pelicot admitted to drugging his wife with tranquilizers.

Pelicot’s tragic past includes a claim of being raped by a male nurse at age nine. He also admitted to a rape in 1999 and is linked to a 1991 rape and murder case, which he denies.

Gisele will attend the trial with her children, facing the horrific ordeal. Her lawyer emphasized that she chose a public trial to deny her attackers privacy.

The case has shocked the public as it exposes the extreme nature of the abuse. Pelicot’s crimes are described as a form of addiction, with his lawyer acknowledging his shame.

The trial continues as Gisele seeks justice for the trauma she endured.
