Jolee Callan’s Last Moments at Mount Cheaha

On August 20, 2015, in Alabama, Loren Bunner, 20, invited his girlfriend, 18-year-old Jolee Callan, to go on a hike at Mount Cheaha. They were still together, and Jolee had no reason to suspect anything was wrong. She trusted him completely.

During the hike, Jolee stood near the edge of a cliff, taking pictures of the horizon. She wasn’t posing for Loren; she was focused on capturing the beauty around her. Unbeknownst to her, Loren had brought a gun, and what was supposed to be a peaceful outing turned into something horrifying.

As Jolee stood there, Loren raised the gun and shot her in the back of the head. She collapsed instantly. Then, without hesitation, he pushed her body off the cliff, letting it fall to the rocks below.

The last image of Jolee, taken by Loren just moments before he killed her, is chilling. She looks so alive, completely unaware that the person behind the camera was about to take her life.

When questioned, Loren claimed they had made a suicide pact. He said they planned to jump off the cliff together but couldn’t do it. According to his version, Jolee asked him to shoot her when she wasn’t looking, and after killing her, he couldn’t bring himself to follow through.

But this story doesn’t make sense. Why would she take pictures of the horizon if she was about to die? Why bring a gun if jumping was the plan? And why would Loren, after killing her, not call for help or show remorse?

The truth is clear: Loren didn’t come to Mount Cheaha to die with Jolee. He came to kill her. Whether out of control, jealousy, or something else entirely, he made a calculated decision to end her life.

On Exact Subtitle, I write about cases like this because they leave so many unanswered questions. How could someone look at someone they supposedly love and plan their murder? How could Loren so casually destroy Jolee’s life and then claim it was a pact? Jolee’s story isn’t just tragic—it’s a reminder of how trust can be shattered in the worst ways imaginable.
