Oldboy (2003) can be seen in Oldboy (2003) where a huge, wide-spread network of events is created around a seemingly “very small event” and thus “a great movie is born”.
What is meant by “very small event” is relative from person to person. For example, telling a hairless person that you’re bald as a joke may be a “little thing” that you consider to be a “severely distressing incident” for the hairless person. So we must realize that at every moment what is a “small thing” to you may be a “big thing” to another. That is the foundation of Oldboy and the core of what it derives from.
“Be it a stone or a grain of sand, in water they both sink”
The other important thing is to “be careful of what our tongue licks.” One small word out of our mouth can have the momentum to destroy a human life. I think you have more or less experience with that. That is what leads to the “very small incident” in Oldboy
“My sister and I new everything but still loved each other. Can you two do the same?”
Even if someone dies of old age, it is a great pain for us. How will the “sudden loss of someone” affect us in such a situation? By sudden I mean to die unexpectedly of old age, premature death, accident or otherwise. It is the “catastrophic consequence” of Oldboy’s “very small incident”. No matter how long such a loss lasts, some may find it unbearable. If the death was caused by another person intentionally or without much thought or indirectly causing it, sometimes “the person who suffered the loss” may feel a great deal of heartbreak, pain, and anger. He may then be tempted to “seek justice in his own way.” It is through this that Oldboy’s “great chain of events emerges from the smallest event” is created.
The story and script of Oldboy is excellent. Cinematography is extremely dark. As usual, the performance of the actors and actresses will leave you in awe. The scenes and events that we see throughout the film are very realistic. Through all these things, the honor of bequeathing an eternal and excellent film work to the world cinema is “Park Chan-wook”.
I use the phrase “cinema full of magic” when making notes about cinema. I adapt those words in relation to “Malayalam cinema”. But now I use the same phrase in relation to “Korean cinema”. Indeed, Korean cinema is an extremely excellent cinema. Whatever flavor you are looking for in cinema, I think you will get more than you expected in Korean cinema. Come, dive into the river of Korean cinema!
