Father’s love is amazing. Although it is a challenge to understand their love and affection, it comes to the surface in a way you and I don’t think. That is why paternal affection is a matter to be read with caution in many cases.
When we understand that, we can understand a father’s love as much as a mother’s love. This does not mean insensitive fathers who are always harsh. So don’t get confused. Thus, Maren Ade’s 2016 film Toni Edrman offers a valuable reading of father’s love.
It was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Winfried Conradi is a music teacher by profession. He is a divorced and single person. Winfried also has a young daughter. She is Ines. Ines works in a business consultancy. Winfried and Ines have a kind of distant relationship.
One of the main reasons for this is that Ines is very busy with her work. Winfried has one particular satisfaction in his life. By being a prankster in some cases and dressing up to show different identities. According to Ines’ current situation, she is not getting much satisfaction from work and personal life. Accordingly, she is under a certain pressure. Winfried tries various tricks to get closer to her daughter’s troubled life. After several such failed attempts, Winfried enters Ines’ life as Toni Erdmann.
Although Toni Erdmann is primarily a father-daughter story, this is truly a humane read beyond that. Especially complex human emotions have been analyzed very wonderfully. Winfried or Toni Erdmann’s character shows the loneliness of aging parents during that period. He tries to get close to his daughter by using various tactics and not just to support her.
It is shown in various situations how the loneliness in his life has an effect on such behavior. At the same time, we can see Winfried’s love and affection for his daughter in different ways. Ines is generally a quick-tempered person. Some of Winfried’s jokes make her very angry, but he also manages to turn it off. At the same time, Toni uses Erdmann to guide her daughter, breaking many of our traditional ideas about fathers. At the same time, the character of Ines also shows the struggles of the young community who are under pressure due to the competition in the industry.
Directed and written by Maren Ade, this is mainly presented as a comedy-drama. The humor included here is not forced comedy at all. It has been managed in a very balanced way with the complexity of the story theme. The waiting time here is two and a half hours. Since this is a very slow-moving film, it really felt like it in the opening hour.
But starting from the second half, the story got on track. Therefore, the first hour should be watched with patience. Of particular note here is the dialogue (especially the dialogue between Winfried and Ines). The sometimes uncomfortable conversations between father and daughter were presented without any hesitation. Therefore, its realistic nature was shown very well.
The performances here are also unforgettable. Peter Simonischek as Winfried/Toni Erdmann brought the father character to life very successfully. The character’s lovability, loneliness and sometimes flaws were highlighted in this performance. Sandra Huller as Ines also did the best for the role.
Toni Erdmann can be called one of the best films I have seen so far about father’s love.
